It all began the weekend before (May 2-May 6) when after finals I went down to Bend, OR to see my family for the weekend. I called John Thursday evening only to find out that he too was now in Bend. I was surprised and a little upset that he didn’t tell me that he was coming over the pass. I felt lied to and that he was hiding something from me. I complained to my mom who then told me that he had gotten a speeding ticket and needed to come down for his court date. She said that he didn’t want to tell me because he thought I would get upset. I then got really upset that he had lied to me. The next weekend (May 10-May11) John went back down to Bend for “traffic school”. He came back Saturday late afternoon and we decided to go to dinner. He told me that he wanted something “a little nicer than Red Robin” so I dressed up and did my hair and makeup. We then decided to go to dinner at Henry’s 12th Street Tavern. We began driving but then John took a detour to the St. John’s Bridge. He parked in a nearby parking lot and he had me get out and turn around. Then we started walking and I told him that I didn’t really want to go on the bridge because of all of the traffic so we went underneath instead to Cathedral Park.
When we got down to the park we stopped at the top at a ledge and sat down. He sat beside me and began to shake back and forth. He started tearing up and I asked him what was wrong; he said they were happy tears. He told me how difficult it was for him to lie to me about getting a ticket and he never wanted to do that again. He told me how much he loved me and then took my hand turned to kneel in front of me and proceeded to ask me to marry him. I took the ring out of the box and quickly put it on my finger, and said yes!
Megan had been dropping hints here and there for some time. I had known I wanted to propose for a long time... I am a procrastinator at heart! She had found a ring at a local Jewelers called Saxons. Unfortunately/Fortunately it was not there when I went in to take a look. This forced my creative side to come out.
I worked with Nell, the most awesome and friendly sales person to pick out a band that she would love. I finally found one, but the mount was too tall for my up and coming Nurse. Nell and the Head Jeweler listened to what I wanted and said come check it out next week. Ugh! Megan and I were only in town for the weekend... I would have to find a way to get back down to Bend without Megan getting suspicious.
The following weekend I drove down to Bend without telling megan. Of course she eventually found out. I had to come up with a story quick! To make matters worse her mom was involved and had already started a story. We crafted an elaborate story that I had to return to Bend because I received a speeding ticket the week before. This satisfied Megan for now.
With Megan on to me, I arived home and asked her out to dinner. I had to ask her soon as I am sure she had her suspicions. On our way to dinner I took a slight detour and headed for her favorite landmark in the Portland area; Saint Johns Bridge. We walked down underneath to Cathedral park to avoid the traffic and hopefully have some privacy. The scene was set: Woman of my dreams? Check!, Gorgeous backdrop? Check! A ring she cannot say no to? Double Check!
We sit down and I begin to nervously talk and fidgit. I have never been too good at these kind of things. I reflect on the past two weeks; the lies, the time away and explain how I never want to do those things again. Just before the happy tears start to overwhelm me I get down on one knee and pop the question. Before she can say yes, she reaches down and snatches the ring from the box and places it on her finger excitedly! She said yes and the rest is history!!!
